Today the United States Supreme Court decided to save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program. The DACA Program was created under President Obama to protect mostly young undocumented children who were brought to this country by their parents. This ruling saved nearly 700,000 people, also known as Dreamers, from possible deportation to countries they barely knew.
The Court ruled that the Trump Administration provided no legitimate reason to discontinue the Program. This is an incredible blow to the Trump Administration, which had promised to end all forms of undocumented immigration during its 2016 election campaign and had often used the DACA Program as a bargaining chip. Now it is up to the Department of Homeland Security to try to proceed with the rescission of the DACA program with new reasoning, or give up. This will take time and likely could not be completed before the November election.
We at SisterLove are thrilled with this decision. Dreamers have contributed so much to our country already and deserve to feel secure and not fear deportation. These nearly 700,000 people are now able to continue to thrive in their home country, because home is here.
