Taking Action on D.C. Statehood

Today, more than 712,000 Washington D.C. residents are denied full rights and representation in Congress. Despite paying more money in taxes than 22 states, the citizens of our nation’s capital are excluded from having their voices heard through elected representatives on issues that matter most to our country. Depriving Washington D.C. statehood is both a voting and civil rights issue. We can give D.C. residents the representation they deserve, but we need your help. What is the Washington D.C. Admission Act?

The Washington D.C. Admission Act, introduced to Congress this past January, would officially make D.C. the 51st state in the U.S. This legislation has already passed the House of Representatives and now awaits debate in the Senate.

What exactly would the Washington D.C. Admission Act do?

By granting Washington D.C. statehood, residents would have elected officials serving them at the federal level. This means having a voting representative in the House and two senators. D.C. citizens would finally have a voice, a vote in our nation’s Congress, and an input on federal and local policies that impact their everyday lives.

Why does D.C. statehood matter?

Residents of D.C. deserve a voice, a vote in Congress, and control over their local laws. Statehood is the only remedy that provides full representation in Congress for the residents of Washington, D.C., and with a majority Black and brown population, the fight for D.C. Statehood cannot be separated from the fight for racial justice. Denying equal voting rights and full representation to a city that is predominantly Black and brown only exacerbates racial inequality in this country.
